I love children’s movies because they have a way of addressing a situation in a light hearted manner and still somehow capture the true meaning. Take WALL-E for instance. He had to live alone on earth in a giant dump because the humans took everything for granted and wrecked it. The Bee Movie had Barry wanting to be something else while discovering that each bee had a significant value and important contribution to a well functioning hive. We need bees, they bring us food. We need our earth, it brings us everything. When did we become so lost that we take these things for granted? When did the need for more get in the way of what the true meaning of our time here is?
I have come a long way in the way I roll. What I mean by that is I have grown along the way, in a good way. I used to eat pizza pops for breakfast, I used to not recycle, I used to think that my needs were the only ones that mattered. Then I had kids. I was fortunate enough to have two beautiful daughters and something inside me changed. I have been on a slow journey to create a better playground for them. I finally understand that the big picture is not about me. It’s about them, the children. The way that we leave this earth is exactly what they have to look forward to. Don’t you think that is big?
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to live in a clay hut and not interact with society. It’s easy to want to do just that when you read about all of the chemicals and bad things we are doing to our environment. But that’s not me. I am like a high maintenance hippy that wants to clean up the earth for the children. I like having lots of friends and family, and enjoying my time here. I also like dreaming up big ways to create a happy healthy next generation. I believe we all have a purpose and an obligation to respect the earth. I also believe we are meant to have fun and enjoy this life!
The rise in allergies, auto immune disease, infertility, and all the rest have a correlation to the toxicity in our environment. Nature is showing us the truth about what is going on. It is like a mirror, any disharmony in it can be mirrored in us. Let’s take the time to at least acknowledge what is happening and make little changes in our lives. That is all it takes. I have such optimism that we are the change our children are waiting for.
Here is something easy that you can do. There are companies out there working to better the earth like Seventh Generation, or Kiss My Face. If you swap out your soap or laundry detergent and use a greener product you have made an impact. I know it may not seem like much but water covers over 70% of the earth and it is polluted. What we wash down the drain ends up in the water and it affects not only marine life but us as well. Most stores carry a green brand of detergent so it is becoming easier for us to purchase these products. Just think, if you start now your kids will follow suit because you have set that example. Then go and enjoy life and feel good that your actions have an impact on cleaning up our toxic environment!
This is a great idea. It seems like such an overwhelming task – cleaning up the mess we’ve made of the environment, but you are right! If we all do something simple like choosing ‘safe soap’, we will make a difference. I really like Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps. You can get it unscented and it is mild enough for a baby AND certified Organic & Fair Trade.
