At first when I realized what a mess we had gotten ourselves into with the introduction of so many chemicals I felt helpless. I thought the only way I could keep my family safe was to move to the country, live in a clay hut, grow my own food & raise chickens. The thought of doing those things really weighed on me because that is not who I am.
Don’t get me wrong, I respect the people who choose that lifestyle and enjoy it, I really do. It’s just that I am a city girl just like majority of the population. We like our way of life and giving it up seems almost too painful to bear. So why can’t we make changes and be safer while living in the city? Why can’t we buy locally from the wonderful people who dedicate their lives to growing real food? Why can’t we just say no to products filled with known endocrine disrupting chemicals? The truth is we can do all of those things and still enjoy our way of life. We are big numbers that equal big change. Let’s take the power back and not feel like we have to completely change who we are to help make a difference.
Honestly I believe as a society we are meant to progress, to invent new things, to be in a constant state of learning. At this point we just lack doing that respectfully. Maybe if we understood that Mother Nature has provided us with all that we needed we would respect her more? Maybe we should stop feeling the need to grow food bigger, faster, and quicker and stop genetically altering what nature had already perfected? We could do that right? That doesn’t mean we would have to uproot our lives. It means that we need to know that our buying power means something. Manufacturers want to please us because we are the ones who make them their money. When did we lose sight of this? I want you to know that you can make a difference by changing a couple of things. That’s it. It’s not all or nothing, because you deserve happiness and the way of life you are comfortable with.
The problems we are facing are big. Just not bigger than us. By working together and respecting our differences we are going to fix this!
